Thokchom Sony tells stories steaming from his root and culture through his watercolor. A style which is merger of tradition, fashion illustration and fine art.

While being based in New Delhi, he often asked himself “Who am I?” “How much do I know about my root?” and found out he knows only little. The question compelled him to once more return to Manipur with the hunger to learn about the land, the biodiversity, the cultures, his ancestral ways of life and at the same time unlearning the conditions and limitations put upon him by the social construct and norms of the metro cities and life’s structure.

His  "Growing Wild" series is an expressions of going return to his roots to learn and unlearn. Following khangool (footsteps) and rediscovering his emotions and regaining another insight of beauty of his state. A gold mine of inspiration and vision he needed to continue on his route.

His work is about learning. Learning about himself, his people, the land, biodiversity and to seek purpose and connection to the natural world. The green hair color symbolizes the force of life and wisdom in nature. The “Sandrembi” (golden tortoise beetle) symbolizes his childhood curiosity and nostalgic memories. Wild grasses reflect his identity which is sometimes invisible to many but is deeply rooted in sense of belonging.

He finds deep meaning in looking for beauty in diversity and gain a sense of freedom in expressing his findings. Ethnicity, cultural diversity and Mother Nature inspire him

He strongly believes that art in any form is a channel to express our feelings and release our energies in a positive way that can heal others as well as ourselves.
